What we stand for

People in detention depend on decisions made by others for many things. A punishment, a measure, a refusal of leave or a transfer can have major consequences, yet the procedures behind these decisions are unclear to many people. We believe that everyone in detention has the right to fair treatment and to someone who will critically examine the decision.

That is why we work in three ways: we explain how things work, we bring proceedings where doing so is worthwhile, and we are honest when proceedings have little chance of success.

Specialising in detention law

Detention law is a separate area of law with its own rules, bodies and very short deadlines. Lawyers who regularly work in this field are quicker to recognise when a decision does not give adequate reasons, when the duty to hear the person concerned has not been met, or when case law from the Council for the Administration of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles (RSJ) offers scope to challenge a decision. We follow these rulings closely and discuss them on the Rulings page.

Mr. S.P.C. (Stan) Broekmans
